To accommodate an elderly relative, Arch Tech converted an existing garage into a handicapped-accessible suite with bedroom and bath. A new laundry room was added adjacent to the bath, but accessible from the main house to serve the entire family. The floor was raised to match that of the existing home, allowing the relative easy access to the rest of the home’s main floor, including a large new rear deck. A new two-car garage was built to replace the converted one, and the front (street facing) facade was integrated into the home’s design by using the same brick, window styles and gabled roof. A ramp inside the garage provides wheelchair access to the new suite. A rear garage door was added so the family’s third vehicle, a tractor, can be driven directly out to the rear yard. Much-needed storage space was added in the new garage’s attic and in a 10-feet long built-in closet inside the garage.

Arch Tech successfully coordinated the existing garage conversion and the construction of a new garage and laundry room with minimal disruption to the home’s residents. The new space is fully ADA-compliant from an external ramp through its interior, making it fully accessible to its disabled resident.
